Learning How To Be Successful

Perhaps the million dollar question these days is how to be successful? Many of us spend our entire lives chasing success only find that we have fallen dreadfully short of this goal when the day of retirement arrives. The sad fact is that this is more the norm nowadays and not the exception. Too many times, we find ourselves way off the path when we need it most. It is painfully obvious that the state of our nation’s economy indicates we must manage our own successes. This is why it is so important knowing how to be successful.

The first, and perhaps the most important step, to becoming a success is knowing exactly what success looks like. If we try to put our hands around it, many of us will find that our vision of success is unrealistic and even unattainable. This happens more than you probably think. If you do a poor job in defining it, then how in the world will you ever know when it comes into your life? In this regard, success is much like words such as love, hate, and contentment. They are simplistic terms, yet often times they are very difficult to define.

The second step is probably when you may have guessed. Knowing the objectives you must achieve to be successful. The key phrase here is “objectives you must achieve”, meaning that this quest is a very personal issue. Seeking success should be something unique for each of us – unless it is an objective established by a source of authority such as an employer, a college, or a company. Either way, the objective must be defined clearly.

The third element or step to achieving success is having some sort of method for measuring your progress along the way. There are two critical factors in achieving your objective. The first is knowing how far away your are from your objective, the second is knowing how much time you have to get there. These two factors will determine the speed required to get there. Taking measurements along the way is very important. It serves two purposes. The first thing it does is tell you if you are on track to your objective, the second is that it serves to motivate you in multitude of ways.

As you can see, success is not something that people can sit around and wish for. Unfortunately, there are too many people who treat it that way and then wonder why they never achieved anything in the end. The sad fact is that when we are young, this would only require a few simple actions periodically. As we get older, we begin to lose the power of compounding that time provides us. Thus, it is much harder to become a success when we are older.

The irony is that learning how to be successful is something that all of us should do. Not only will our own lives benefit from such an endeavor, but those all around us will benefit as well. Our families, our employers, our churches, and our communities will all reap the benefits of our efforts.
